It will be interesting.

Post All-star game

.284 .337 .469 .806 Anthony Rizzo

Rizzo started hot but Alonzo has been better since the all-star break even though Alonzo has played a bunch of games at Petco Park and Rizzo gets to play at Wrigley Field.
Speaking of Yonder, He currently has 31 doubles and 6 home runs. According to Weighted OBA the value of 31 doubles is the same as 20 home runs and the value of 6 home runs is the same as 10 doubles. How everyone's opinon of Yonder would change if he had 10 doubles and 20 home runs?

Imagine if a year took a century to unfold and you were born in the dead of winter; the coming of summer would seem a frightening change, with temperatures rising dramatically and seemingly without limit.

You want to bet money?
Last night he hit one of those fly balls that have been home runs for him but it was an out on the warning track. Give me a line drive hitter any day.

Line drives can be caught. Balls hit over the fence cannot be caught.

Of course I want to bet money. You have an advantage now, but I'll still bet he'll go yard in this series.

Overall Line Drives become hits at a far higher rate than Fly Balls. That difference increases at Petco Park because Line Drive rates of base hits remains about the same but the Fly Ball rate of being a base hit drops dramatically. Side Note: balls hit over the fence can be caught.

I bet he won't but I don't really want the hassle of taking your money.

Rizzo goes 1-12 in the series. Petco Park turns this guy from Babe Ruth to Pee Wee Herman. I'm sure he will do fine in The Friendly Confines, however, Rizzo's all or nothing batting approach gets eaten alive in PCP.

I'm glad Bill didn't want the "hassle" of taking my money.

Rizzo came pretty close in that first game. Another millimeter of bat on ball and it goes into the deepest part of left center for a homer.

Thanks for saving me a few bucks Bill.

As a Padre fan I'm glad that both my big mouth and the Padre curse didn't prove true.

Earlier you said he wasn't very good. So his 1-12 was right in line with your earlier statements. Our interaction made every Rizzo at bat yesterday a little nail bitter. Good game. I like going to mid-week afternoon games.

Post All-Star Stats
.258 .309 .427 .736 Rizzo
.294 .330 .529 .859 Alonso

Power wise, Alonso's 11 Doubles and 3 Home Runs is much better than Rizzo's ZERO doubles and 5 Home Runs.

Rizzo's first 44 ABs this time up were great. He hit .386 .400 .750 1.150. But since that point he has been doing a slow slide toward a below average 1B. Did it take MLB a little while to adjust to the new Rizzo or does Rizzo have a few more super hot streaks in him?

Rizzo Stats Since his First 44 ABs
.247 .291 .402 .693 (103 PA)

Yonder Alonso. He is the Padres first baseman.

Update:

Since Rizzo was called up (June 26)
.320 .377 .515 .892 Alonso
.289 .336 .451 .787 Rizzo

Alonso has out performed Rizzo since Rizzo was promoted. Alonso is 28 months older, so Rizzo could be progress faster over the next 5 years. But that assumes Rizzo does develop as expected. Rizzo will probably have a better career but it is not as much a difference as it seemed earlier. Comparisons will be difficult due to differences in playing in Petco Park and Wrigley Field.

Career Stats
.232 .314 .370 .684 Rizzo
.281 .347 .414 .761 Alonso

I couldnt care less about Amarista vs. Rizzo. We didnt trade Rizzo for Amarista. We traded Frieri for Amarista.

Rizzo has all the makings of being a really good ballplayer. He's still so young, and has been raking after owning minor league pitching. It sickens me that we traded him essentially straight up for Cashner (I dont count that shitty OF we got in the deal).

Cashner's upside is a 2 or 3 starter. Rizzo might be a perennial All Star if he hits his celing.

I think the Latos trade was before the Rizzo trade. Once we got Yonder, Rizzo could go.

Rizzo's most often comparison throughout the minors was Adam Laroche and that is what I see a above average 1B but not a all star. As for Cashner's upside? It is easily a ace but there is no reason to expect him to stay healthy, he has filthy stuff but his medicals are very scary according to Keith Law and pretty much no one can see him staying healthy long term if he is a starter.

Rizzo is very young. "Upsides" are not nearly as clear for 23 year old major leaguers. Rizzo could become an all-star type first baseman.

Cashner's last start was impressive because he wasn't hitting triple digits. He said later he is more concerned with locating his fastball. That is key to Cashner becoming a good pitcher. There is no reason he can't become a very good starter.

Rizzo has been hot. He hit 2 home runs against the Pirates yesterday:

Post All-Star Game
.288 .349 .450 .799 Rizzo
.289 .357 .438 .795 Alonso

They are pretty even since the All-Star Break.

Since Rizzo was called up
.300 .352 .491 .843
.293 .374 .442 .816

Rizzo more power and Alonso less outs.

This was just a bad trade by the Padres no matter how you slice and dice it. The GM pulled the trigger too quick. I was dumbfounded by this trade. Most of his moves were great except this one.

The trade will be hard to judge because of the massive difference between Wrigley Field and Petco Park. Rizzo can be the better player but still be worse for the Padres because he wouldn't hit well in Petco Park. The Padres are trying to get more line drive hitters. I think they felt Rizzo will be more of a fly ball-type power hitter that would suffer in Petco Park, while Alonso is a line drive hitter who will hit better in Petco Park. The unadjusted numbers will never be a good reflection of whether that is a good decision or not.
