"If you've got a business, you didn't build that." « Thread Started on Jul 16, 2012, 9:59am »
What a marxist. What a anti-American, no good cheating scumbag. He doesn't thank businesses for creating the economy and paying for all the bridges, his vacations, his golf game, his free education, the feeding of elana kagan who never sat in a courtroom in her life--you could've brought in another libel who did...
Did anyone else hear his speech on Friday out of Roanoke VA?
So because he says someone else built your business, then that someone else would be entitled to your business?? Is that it? So, if I buy a jet from my savings, hire out and fly you, your party, and provide on-time, fast and friendly service, and I pay for from your income, all the costs and despite competition from Air France, Southwest, United etc., I continue in business, pay myself a living wage, save for retirement, pay all 112 taxes to the federal, state, local, and district governments, and stay healthy by eating correctly, exercising, and sleeping while avoiding drugs, alcohol, and sleasy jerks, then I don't have the credit, I have to give it to who?

You see, I wanna work. From age 16, I have this drive, and I go to work and I work as fast as possible, think as hard as I can, and create jobs for all that I can muster.
THERE IS NO ONE that gets any credit. He's a jerk.
I put myself through San Diego State. I worked 32 hours a week average, plus an internship at a local business, and graduated from State in four years.
It was the People of the State of California who paid for San Diego State. I paid tuition that is collected to pay for the salaries. I get the credit for paying for the buildings, roads, streets...

I'm going to defend the President -- provisionally anyway -- because I think people give themselves too much credit for their successes.
You can be the brightest, hardest worker on the planet but if you are living in a war torn, economically almost non-existent country, then your upside is pretty limited. You are probably not going to invent an iAnything.
Success is about opportunity, luck and hard work. Seed money or an inheritance is only part of the equation. How successful would you have been if people before you hadn't built and defended this country? If someone hadn't sacrificed for your education or if society hadn't supported the schools financially? If the infrastructure didn't exist before you got here? If the economic and political system wasn't supportive of your efforts?
If the time wasn't right? Bill Gates would have been dinner, instead of rich, in prehistoric times. How many of today's billionaires would have been wealthy if they had been born 100 years ago? Most might have been successful but few would probably have been wealthy.
Success is about opportunity, luck and hard work. You get credit for your hard work -- but hard work is the last, and perhaps even the least important component. Nobody I know can honestly say that they built their company because they didn't build the opportunity -- and without that, and a hell of a lot of luck along the way, they would not be particularly successful today.
Yoda out...
Edit: Now that I've seen the link below, I will make that support unqualified (on this point) -- not provisional. You can argue the tax issue but nobody in their right mind would ever take sole credit for their own success. They can take credit for what they did with the opportunities that they were given in life -- whether or not they own a company. But that's as far as it goes, in my view.

He's only right IF a person inherited that business or a substantial amount of the seed money necessary to start it.
Otherwise, I agree with JOC.
Whether it be seed money, inheritance, bank loans, grants, savings, whatever. Your business still has to be worked and become and stay successful. This clown has no idea about what it takes to do this. All he can do is sing and dance at fundraisers. He's a fuckin salesman, that's all.
I can see where you think he is a salesman, as that is a big part of what pols do. How do you know about the other part?
Over 125 fundraisers in 3.5 years. What else is he going to do? Actually I'm just kidding. But I am perturbed at his complete lack of respect for the small businessman with comments like this.

I am going to say that Obama was not very clear as to what he meant, but I am going to say he was trying to say that a particuliar small business did not build the infrastructure that is in place that makes his business viable.
I still holler BS because it was the taxes of business big and small along with personal income tax that built infrastructure. The taxes on present business will go to further build out future needed infrastructure unless Obama blows it on Food Stamps.

Poll time.
Raise your hand if you have run a successful small business.
Okay. The rest of you should never be allowed to work in the government.
There are too many who work in government but have no clue how a successful business operates let along a country. Nearly all teachers are like this. Okay, some have run successful small businesses but very few. Teachers don't have a clue and therefore what osamatax said to give credit to a teacher is hogwash. He's a total jerk.

I agree with a lot you say Yoda. I will go one step further. And it is my own spiritual belief. But everything we have in life, wealth, success in business, and even hardships are all gifts from God and are part of a bigger plan. For every Gates in the world, there are a lot of others with the same ideas. So why him? I don't know. Ask God. A lot of people work damn hard. Yet few are wealthy. Why? Ask God. I could go on. Whether it's timing or luck of the draw, only a Higher Power knows. We all draw different hands and can only move forward from there.
Well, back to Obama. I would give him a lot more credibility to him saying this stuff if he had the practical experience of working in the private sector and running a businewss of his own.

I ran a successful small business AND worked in government. So what? I value the contribution of teachers way more than my work, because most of them have the ability and patience to work with young people - I don't have that talent and I respect it greatly. The teaching profession should be valued and the time an effort they take to get to the classroom is way over the top.
