One cause of the Feds' budget woes.

This one could have gone in any of the political sections save for the one dedicated to international issues. Please read this and you will understand part of why I and many others are so concerned about the growing welfare/entitlement mentality that grips the federal government.

Well, each month I get my teachers pension, a small Social Security check, plus money from an annuity. I paid into all of those programs. Oh, and let me explain that my S.S. check is very small because I am penalized 60% due to the California State Teachers Retirement System's not being part of Social Security.

I mention that to point out why it's unlikely that I will get back more from S.S. than what I put in. (And that brings up another point. Had I put the money that went into Social Security into any of a number of investment programs I would be getting more than I am now. . . and that even with the stock market crash of '08. I know that because my other investments have made a good come-back since '08.)

So I am not really "on the dole." The problem today is not people such as me. The problem is people who saved nothing over 40 or 50 years of "work." And that is true of about 50% of our retirees, which explains why it's so easy to demagog any attempt to adjust entitlements to avoid national bankruptcy. . . too many Americans did nothing to plan for retirement and are dependent on S.S., including SSI, to avoid starvation. To be fair to FDR, one must remember that the system was never intended to be a substitute for personal savings and job-related pension plans. Unfortunately, that's the way it has turned out in way too many cases.

Also, starting in the Johnson administration (L.B.J. not Andrew! ;)), the Feds started raiding the S.S. fund to help pay for expanded federal spending and replaced the money with I.O.U.s. Nice going, Lyndon! :P.

I in no way think that anyone who stayed in the public education system long enough to receive a pension is on the dole. You should be saluted.

Along with anyone in the private or public sector who paid into a system that could disappear a week after they retire if they pass away.

If people want to find a system to vilify they need look no further than State, County and City pension programs where unions are involved.

I am not enamored with Teacher's Unions, but I am not talking about their pension system. It is direct Public Sector systems that are a huge problem. Teachers even get taken a bit if you believe this site: http://www.403bwise.com/

It is no wonder you did not bring Federal pensions. You collect two. The ones you mention are partially funded. Your two are a bigger liability for the taxpayers.

I trust you are saving money for your kids. They will need it to pay the future bills for your current pensions.

Exactly why the wife and I don't touch those pensions. They disappear when we pass away so we just invest that money.
