 Effin's Pub NOT Closing
« Thread Started on Aug 29, 2012, 3:19pm »

Edit: Ok I just got word that they are NOT closing but actually EXPANDING/REMODELING. Sleepy and 1611 are correct.

If this is true, then today is a sad day for a campus in need of an established watering hole.

Although the pub wasn't very close to campus, they really supported the university and our athletic programs. Great staff and stiff drinks; all you needed. They also had the best SDSU flag I have ever seen on display; modeled after the U.S. flag but red an black strips and "SDSU" where the 50 stars normally are.

On a personal note, a lot of the newer SDSU generation turned and celebrated their 21st birthday's there.

Loved that back door when I was 19/20. What was the guy's name that sang classic rock songs with raunchy lyrics, used to love that $#!+. Surprised to see it is closed.

Are you sure about this? Every time for the last month or so I've driven by it said all over the front "Yes, We're Open! Just Re-Modeling"

I'm not sure.

Note the question I posed as the topic headline and the opening words "if this is true."

Lived within staggering distance of that place and Kelly's Pub. That's really disappointing and frankly surprising given all of the money I spent there over the years.

they remodeled the interior a year or so ago, prob just fixing the exterior now.

wouldn't surprise me though. It's generally viewed that if you're 21 in this area and not in PB, something went wrong somewhere along the line. It was always dead the handful of times I was there.

Relieved to know they are not shutting down.

I can't count how many times we've all sang "Don't Stop Believing" in unison at the end of the night in there. I also can't count how many times I've blacked out and been kicked out of the place.

i love that it's the place that we go and remember, and its a great bar - it's just never seemed to be the sdsu sports obsessed destination place that woodstocks is. if there's a game that i want to watch with a packed house of die hards, i go to woodstocks. i hope the remodel changes this, i love effins. paint that bar red and black.

I don't know anything about Effin's, but I wish I could share with you the near campus destinations of my career at SDSU. We can begin with the Two Bit Sandwich Shop (and its pitchers) right next to campus on College Avenue, the Lions Den, Rounders Room, Quaff Barrel and my favorite, Andy's Pub - all on El Cajon Blvd. Late 60s and early 70s, those were the places. Hope Effin's is in the same image for all current Aztecs.

Actually it was Andy's Saloon and I spent a lot of time there myself. If I wanted something more high end I would head to the Aspen Mine Co.

Good to see you here, Doug.

Did the Aspen Mining Club later become Winter's? Do you know? (It was on like College and 54th; now it's a mortuary.)

I spent some time in that place too.

No idea what the Aspen Mine Co turned into. I moved back to LA in 76. I do recall after I turned 21 going to another joint called the Glass Stem for cocktails right up in that area. This will probably turn into a bar thread.

Right you are Doug about Andy's Saloon. I do not believe it became Kelly's. Dick (who conceived, opened and operated Andy's later purchased a Persian and Belly Dancing Plae down on Fletcher Parkway. Andy's was a terrific place with second hand tables and chairs, cheap beer, great happy hours and eventually a taco counter that was open if and when its operator got across the border.

Perry Allan (the "Mayor of Lecher Hills") had an excellent moring show on KDEO which carried Aztec broadcasts by Ron Reina and Tom Nettles. One time he got the station to back a live broadcast from Andy's or a "Beef Jerky and Beer Breakfast" on the stations dime. At the time I was a student teacher at an elementary school just a few blocks away and was pretty altered by the time I got to work. The place was packed and we consumed so much beer for breakast that the station cut us off. Those were the days!
