Utah State in the MW « Thread Started on Jul 5, 2012, 8:00am »
Article this morning in the SLTRIB noting that Coach Stew Morrill will probably have the "deepest and most talented team of his USU coaching career", which given his won-loss record is saying something.
That said, the article states that winning the MW, or even competing for the title will be a huge challenge. The article notes the "national brand" of UNM and UNLV, the hiring of Larry Eustachy at CSU and the conference rivalry with UNR.
I remember attending my first USU game at Logan against UNR back at the turn of the century, (a time when community support for Aztec basketball was still an after thought), and given the energy at the game telling myself, this is what college basketball is all about!
My point? Though the man is too much of a class act to ever publicly go down this road, I will stay it. I believe Coach Fisher, (a national championship coach), is taking a bullet for the football team and it's gotta sting. I mean, the only real success Aztec athletics have had is men's, (and women's), basketball and the bus circuit, (to offset football travel costs), is his reward.
Using my previous metaphor, there are those that believe Aztec athletics is moving from a "destroyer escort" to an "aircraft carrier"..
I sincerely hope to hell they're right.

We have no choice. Without a football program our basketball must leave the MW anyway. If we don't take this opportunity handed to us to keep D1 football viable at SDSU then we have essentially given up.
It does suck for Basketball. Fisher is taking it like a man and dealing with the move in the best way he can. I expect that from him. He is a class act.

If the many board posters are correct that the BE will expand its football presence out west the MWC is a dead man walking, at least from a quality perspective. The programs moving to the Big East will need a home for basketball and UNLV, Fresno, and UNR more than likely will end up in the Big West. Fisher just made the move a little sooner than the rest .

Cal State Fullerton hasn't had a football team for about 20 years. The father of a kid my son played Pop Warner with was on their team when they shut the program down.
As to USU, whatever benefit their being in the MWC will be neutralized by their horrible football team. Three winning seasons in 30 years. Just awful. The Borg's little bro. Actually wannabe little bro. They haven't even been good enough with the pigskin to warrant sleeping on a mattress in the Borg's garage.
Here's hoping we hear nothing further about that pissant school until we play them in football again next year.

I am sure USU is looking to improve their football program by making the move just like SDSU is doing with their move. "USU 3 winning seasons in 30 years", is that that much different than SDSU's history. How many winning season's has the Aztecs had in the last 15 or 20 years? Calling the kettle black are you not?

SDSU has had 10 winning seasons in the last 30 and we've been playing in conferences which were either one level or two levels higher than the Aggies.
BTW, their nickname even sucks the root. How many universities have that unoriginal nickname? I was watching History Channel 2 last week and they had a program about building of the railroad coast to coast. The Golden Spite was planted in Promentory, which isn't far at all from Logan. Therefore, if USU had a brain, their school would have a nickname associated with that historic event.
Utah State University: One more great reason to escape from the MWC.

Shoot, I'm hoping we buy out that game so we don't have to send our team to that "hole."

Real talk. Its crazy how we can develop a BCS attitude with no BCS success.

Seriously. Ride the boise coat tail to half relevancy while continuing to put a marginal MW team on the field, and all of a sudden sdsu football's last 20 years are magically forgotten.

If we are so close to losing football, then how are SJSU and Cal State Fresno surviving?
You must be totally uninformed to seriously ask that question. Sort of like the Democrats running our State into bankruptcy. Do you think you can just print money to solve our budget problems?

Aggie is short for agriculture. The schools that use that name are former agricultural colleges such as USU, New Mex St, UC Davis and Texas A&M. A&M stands for Agricultural and Mechanical. So essentially, USU is playing tribute to their past.

I know that. However, one of the great things about SDSU is that we have a unique nickname. "Aggie," OTOH, isn't close to unique. I'll bet there at are least a dozen schools with that nickname.
If you're located in area which has nothing unique about it, that's one thing. But completion of the railroad lessened the trip from the east coast to California from six months to six days. More than anything, it led to settlement of the Great Plains. So for USU to call itself the Aggies rather than something reflecting Logan's proximity to where the Golden Spite was put in place just shows a complete absence of ingenuity in my book.

Tell that to all the Eagles, Tigers, Bulldogs, Panthers, Knights, Lions, Cougars, and Bears roaming the college sports world.
