It says the site is north of Viejas on the former seats of Aztec Bowl. Great spot!

Validity aside, can someone tell me what exactly a hoops practice facility is for? Don't you just need a court -- ie Viejas Arena -- to practice on??

There was an article in the UT last year on how much sdsu bball was doing on a shoestring budget and facilities. We were one of the rare exceptions to not have or be building a practice facility to be in the top 25 and all the big programs had them. If anything, it's keeping up with the joneses. The impact of UNLV's practice facility can be seen.

Petersen is an old, old facility that the coaches and players complain of being tough on their joints. It also is basically just a high school gym with the fold down backboards, where this would have 3 full courts, it would have upgraded lockerrooms (and if attached to Viejas improve our current spartan gameday lockerroom) the practice facilities have card access so players could go there and practice on their own (so Leonard wouldn't have had to go to Home Depot and buy a halogen light so he could shoot shots). Viejas is owned by associated students and so the program can't just turn on the lights in a huge arena to practice and shoot. Viejas has concerts, women's games, etc frequently there. Petersen has to fit in Women's volleyball, women's practice, men's practice.

In short: it would be a game changer and help solidify the future of State as a major basketball player

Could some of the "Push for $500 Million" money be being reassigned? :-X

The site would more than likely be Peterson Gym. I think when they raze it they must leave a common wall so it could be considered a remodel instead of a new building. I'm no contractor, but I believe that would eliminate a lot of political red tape delays to get this project off the ground when funded.

The document posted says multi-floored and adjacent and attached to Viejas on the north end - so the parking lot - that's at least one of the proposals

Project Description
This project is to provide a basketball practice facility. The project will consist of the following components:
o Three full size basketball courts with telescoping bleachers for 130 spectators
o Approximate gross square feet 33,000
o Goal of athletics is to provide a dedicated high quality basketball practice facility designed and built to the standards common among those found in higher education facilities
o Amenities associated with this facility will include those typically found in dedicated University practice facilities such as locker rooms, lounges, restroom facilities, training rooms, coaches’ offices and supporting spaces.

Last time we went around on this that is exactly where I said it should go as it not only is open space, but it will allow for radically upgraded gameday Locker room.

That Petersen site needs to eventually be upgraded for volleyball, raquetball, etc.

Yes thanks, my bad. I didn't read the document fully. That location will present another dilemma, however. Have they forgotten about those jerks who fought to preserve the Aztec Bowl? That's why Viejas is where it is. You know they'll come out of the woodwork to protest if the AB site is threatened.

It'll go in the parking lot, I imagine someone might complain just to complain, but the bowl itself won't be encroached upon, just the already paved parking lot.

The seating on the sides is what was protected. It sounds like this facility would replace the asphalt parking lot. It shouldn't be an issue unless they propose building into the slopes where the Aztec Bowl seats are... which I'm sure they will avoid.

Treat people with respect as if you were talking to them in person.

I don't live behind internet anonymity. You can find me in Section V, Row 5, Seats 3&4 at Viejas.

With the postings others have uncovered I radically change my stance - this is a huge step for us as a program, hope it progresses quickly.

Of course man. This news is megatron!

I can't wait until we start getting more details.

Facility will be located on west side of Viejas Arena parking lot right adjacent to the Rec center. This seems to mean that the cement bleachers on that side of lot will go.

indeed. I just thought a couple hours ago it was some behind the scenes dealing, with it posted that shows it is fairly serious and there are some expectations of it being built.

Checkbook is in hand. One night years ago Mike Bohn said that Peterson would be gutted and completely renovated as soon as the school could find a way to do without it for awhile. With this new building I think they can, and it will. Great leap forward for the athletic department.

I wonder if this new facility would also accomodate volleyball practice and games given that . Peterson Gym is a pit so it would be a shame to pour more money into that place when something much better could be built in such a prime location.

Just did some googling and several other schools including Colorado and Louisville use their basketball practice facilities for volleyball too.

The news is great, and since space is at a premium on the Mesa taking out old Peterson Gym would be a good idea! In fact, I was very surprised that they built Viejas Arena over Aztec Bowl it should have been built at Peterson Gym, and leave Aztec Bowl for the future new football stadium. Too late now.

It would be a very generous thought to get M . Cage and K .Leonard involved with a group of local Alums ,to make this happen. Just putting together a video presentation of the propsed project could help with recruiting. Or maybe Dutcher could get a few of the Fab 5 ,involved.

The Peterson site wouldn't have been nearly enough to handle the footprint of a Viejas; the Aztec Bowl site would have needed to suck up land on each side to handle a modern football field
