Yeah, because no one wanted our OL coach who came from lowly-hanging Idaho.
And we didn't want a HC from lowly Ball State and UM didn't want a HC from lowly SDSU - funny how that happens...
Yes, I like that last line of wisdom. You should be careful what you say. Many great coaches have come from small unknown places. There is no way to equate quality just from where you came from. Many who have realized later how foolish they were.

I admit I am biased in this conversation, but I think you can see good coaches come from all levels of college football. I attended SFSU, ( lousy football program before it was finally killed off ) and it helped develop such people as Andy Reid, Mike Holmgren, Bob Toledo, and Lavell Edwards and Dan Ferrigno...who has coached at a few universities along the way to his current stop at Michigan...:)
Good coaches know football, regardless of where they coach. Many factors play in to why a coach would stay at a school or move around chasing other positions.
Does anyone recall the name of that ex-pro oline coach we had last year who went back to school? They mentioned his name on 1360AM yesterday, and he got his degree this month. That makes him eligible to be a line coach now. Mike Schmidt is still listed as GA.

All of that is very true, in my opinion, but unfortunately it takes key people in power---such as the AD and the HC--- to recognize and pick those talented individuals. In thirty years at SDSU I've seen only ONE brilliant (or even above average) hire and that was Hoke. The others have been utter disasters. The administration was caught in a trap when Hoke left for Michigan, and we'll see what happens with Long. However, it does not appear that Long, over his 11 years as HC has selected or created, other than Mendenhall, very may "great", or even good coaches. So I'm skeptical that much will come from that side of the football. It will need to come from our AD and his selection committee.

Have to agree with Aztecdad. Brings to mind a former Aztec HC who started out at the University of British Columbia (2-16), followed that with brief stints at Wenatchee Valley College and Fort Ord. Three successful years at powerhouse Whittier College got him a job as an assistant with John McKay at USC. Anyone want to finish this story?

And in Brady Hoke's 9 years as a head coach his tree includes a 6-18 Stan Parrish, Al Borges who couldn't get hired by his D2 Alma Mater and we all know Rocky Long sucks... so actually we have had no above average coaches.

Rocky Long and his rag tag staff won at UNM for Pete's sake. I don't care that there isn't a Rocky Long coaching tree, I am not hiring a coach to be an arborist, I am, last time I checked, hiring him to win football games. Hoke used us like a cheap Georgia mule in August sun, when he won't sign his extension, he was gone. Get over it and don't step into the pile he left behind. While he was looking, our AD should have been looking too. Pax on their house.
Rocky is also bringing back former players to build the program with. Let's see how Hall does with strength and adding power weight not sloppy fat weight. Hall is the most important hire that Rocky has made. Hall spends more time with the players than any coach. His results will be show on Saturday night. Critical, critical. He sees something in Schmidt and now Hamilton to get them involved.
Let's talk about recruiting. Hoke recruited SoCal, he was quick and dirty. Rocky is throwing the net out wider and laying the foundation for a national program. He has a plan for recruiting and the type of player they recruit and they are out there going after the best player they can attract no matter where they are.
Guess Rocky isn't a good coach, no tree, no early commits, no plan, no national championship. Hey Tollner is still out there.

"Because he's the hero SDSU deserves, but not the one it needs right now...and so we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not a hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector...a dark knight." -Commissioner Gordon on Rocky Long

I like how we are making the TE position a big emphasis on our team. I hope to see lots of 2 TE formations next year with Boesch and Escobar, both guys are downfield killers.

This myth has to end. No he didn't. He was under .500. Because he beat the snot out of Craft and Long doesn't make him a great coach.
Rocky beat the lousy, non-bowl teams at UNM and lost the bowl to a mediocre team; he beat the lousy, non-bowl teams at SDSU and lost the bowl to a mediocre team. Water finds it's level.

Brady Hoke was a stiff also; 34-38 before he got to SDSU. Then just barely over .500 here. Hire at Michigan as an under .500 coach. He fits your definition of a lousy coach also.

The most important distinction and difficulty with your point is that Hoke was selected after a major process of review by a special committee. Rocky stumbled into the position when we had no where to turn. The results of that so far are still up for debate, but definitely not impressive.

I sure as hell wouldn't go around shouting, he was a winner at Ball State. His best year was also far better than Rocky ever had at UNM.

Long's 8-5 first year; Brady 4-8. Considering that Brady was not recruiting his second year but interviewing for Michigan; Long's record is more impressive.
Don't fault Long if the AD was asleep. He stood up and did a good job for his first year. LEt's see what he does this year.
