Bob, Romney's main thrust, and indeed the main thrust of the conservative movement in general, is that government has gotten too big and costs too much. Somehow we must cut back on the size and cost of government or else go broke. Now, how long it will take to make progress along those lines is open for debate.
My own belief is that we cannot do this all at once. We will have to slow the growth of government gradually . No doubt by using attrition (i.e., retirements, etc.) a lot can be accomplished. Reworking retirement systems to be more economically affordable will also be necessary. Lots of people are going to feel the pain, but there is no alternative save going over an economic cliff.
Barack Obama has no real plan to slow the growth of government. He has no plan to boost the economy except pour more money into government jobs, and that will only make things worse.
So, Bob, keep telling yourself that there is no real problem. Keep telling yourself that we can continue to increase the size of government and the cost of government with no ill effects. Keep doing your Alfred E. Neuman impression and I'm sure all will be well.
Imagine if a year took a century to unfold and you were born in the dead of winter; the coming of summer would seem a frightening change, with temperatures rising dramatically and seemingly without limit.

THE NFL SHOULD LOOK AT THE ARMED FORCES. "I couldn't even finish your latest Monday Morning Quarterback article before writing. The conversation you wrote about between you and the commissioner really prompted me to write. It seems the NFL is looking for a way to better transition its players into regular life. I would suggest the NFL look to the U.S. military as an example of how to transition players out of the league.
I'm a Navy vet and I was sent to a week-long school to prepare me for my transition from the Navy to civilian life. Some of the services available to service members as they leave include mental health care through the military for 90 days past their service date and then from the V.A.
We received training in resume-writing, job-hunting, house-hunting and in our veteran's benefits. I was required to have a resume by the end of the class. I had been given information about unemployment, medical and dental expenses, health insurance (something I had zero knowledge about as a service member), budgeting a household and where to go for counseling (I have PTSD from the war). Stu, doesn't need me to fight his battles. But, as a retired Army guy I'll state that those other "tempo" terms are newer in time, and used by the "suits" in D.C.

If someone in the "line" gave the response you did above of "Learn your own lingo" you would've been classified as a "cheese dick" in my time and peered out as someone more focused on politics then mission accomplishment and taking care of the soldier.

Most military folks don't carry weapons and shoot people. Most hold jobs for which they are trained, that have civilian equivalents; electronics techs, aircraft maintenance, accounting, mechanics etc. That combined with the work experience they garner while serving is sufficient training to get folks transitioned to civilian life.
Those that are combat arms are often the least prepared but come out with benefits that allow them to go to school and get training once they ETS. My nephew for instance, a Stryker Machine gunner and Afghanistan vet is currently enrolled at UNLV in their Hospitality program using the GI bill.
Additionally, many of the large defense manufacturers have "Hire a Vet" ( as well as Hire a Disabled Vet) programs that bring these guys on and provide training.
