High Stakes Poker: Time To Push All Our Chips In
« Thread Started on Jan 5, 2013, 11:41pm »

Preface: This is purely my personal opinion and thought...and not based on any inside information. I have the opportunity to speak with our AD on a monthly basis in private and semi-private...though I would never share even 1% of it on this forum...sorry. I have absolutely no idea how this is going to play out...or what conference(s) we will be in next year.

Since I make as many of the ongoing decisions regarding the future of Aztecs Athletics as every other poster here...my opinion can prove just a worthless as anyone else's by Monday.

Here it goes.

I am proud to be associated with our AD Jim Sterk. The leadership of SDSU and Boise State can walk into any room with the the rest of the MW knowing they are the only one's willing to step out of their comfort zones and attempt to lead their schools to the "Players Table" in this realignment circus.

I'm happy to see Mike Aresco and the Big East membership not bow down to Boise State. I'm certainly not surprised to watch Craig Thompson and the rest of the MW bend over for Boise State. I can't wait for the day (coming soon) that the MW TV schedule comes out and everyone sees how the "finite" tv pie is split up. I look forward to hearing the MW "leaders" spin it.

Boise State has punked them all...knowing exactly how much money they get by picking their pockets for a couple of years.

The MW is made up of two groups: schools that have absolutely no leverage and will now vote as a block hoping to just stay together year by year...and schools that do...and should have better leadership.

Outside of getting the "Dream Invite"...I believe Boise's end game is still the same as SDSU's. We want a western division all-sports conference starting with the 2014/15 season.

The day the MW tv schedule comes out...every MW AD that didn't have the guts to step up and lead when they had the opportunity...will have their secretaries call Jim Sterk and Mike Aresco and ask if they are willing to take their calls.

I believe Mike and Jim will...and four of them (along with Boise + Houston/SMU) will save their jobs and their universities.

Those lucky eight AD's/Presidents will be publicly thanking Jim Sterk and Mike Aresco for their incredible vision and leadership.

It's time for Mike Aresco to quickly step up and prove to be the leader we all need and think he can be. No one was more excited than me when he was hired but being a great tv executive does not guarantee you can lead a conference. I still hope and think he will turn out to be a genius pick (I also thought hiring the OC of the National Champ was a genius pick to be our football coach at the time...you just never know until they actually have the job. ;)).

Mike Aresco needs to come up with some assurances now. We need him to come through and he now needs SDSU to help him become the commissioner of the first 16 team "Super Conference".

I think we are two years away from a fantastic situation for all of our programs and fans.

I think we will know all of this by July 1 and with that knowledge...will make going to the BW a very comfortable two year vacation home.

I also think we have already been great guest in the BW...providing much more exposure for them with a great tv package and 1.5 million Boise exit fee for purely taking a vote.

All I would ask of them is to allow their commissioner to be a man of his word (they voted him down) and allow for a 14 game basketball schedule for the next two seasons. I'm sure we'd be as flexible as needed to accomodate who and where you want us to play...just please let us represent you to the highest level as possible while we are members.

I won't go political but anyone who thinks staying the course will actually benefit SDSU...I don't know how to change your mind. I give you that the MW has a small slice available for SDSU from a very small pie. The problem is we can't live off of that small slice and would be forced to ask the state to continue to fund our football program. CA doesn't even have a pie...and anyone that understands pensions and entitlements realize CA will probably not have a pie for as long as any of us are alive. I believe they will keep spending like they do have a pie...just not on our football program.

SDSU either stands on it's own now...or we will soon be a permanent "all-sports" member of the BW forever.

It's time to push all of our chips in!

Dave L, if AztecMesa had a bar, your money would not be any good here tonight! What do you drink? Should we ever meet, it's on me!

I am right with you, Dave. I have been one of the biggest "non-supporters" of the BW move, however I am a realist and understood the BE move. CA is crumbling and we had to make that move. If we can actually build the super conference over the next 2 years, we will be in great shape for all sports. What I don't understand is why Boise would not be willing to maintain the course toward a future super conference with the BE as the foundation.

One could argue that we could have the MWC the foundation of a future super conference, but I don't have any confidence in the leadership of the MWC making that bold move. I can see major defections of the MWC in a few years to the future BE superconference.

My dream would be having a Coast-to-Coast basketball conference with Memphis, Connecticut (if a TV deal can keep them), UNLV, BYU, NM, SDSU, etc. That would be an incredibly fun and powerful basketball conference.

Please Please make this happen BE leadership and Mr. Sterk.

The more I learn about the Boise deal and the crumbs that will be left over for everyone else, the more my speed picks up as I get ready to jump back on the nBE bandwagon.

Here is the problem with the super conference idea.......it just doesn't sound like it has any application to the Big East name.

I'm all in...for SDSU regardlesss of the outcome, but I certainly feel big east/big west is best for our entire program including Basketball that will gain more exposure playing memphis or temple than in playing the entire MWC schedule, not to mention Kansas.

That's why Aresco will sell the name to the Catholic 7.

Very interesting if that does happen.

BTW, the Oracle agrees with your post in that whatever happens, SDSU must seek the opportunity to grow as a brand. With the information you have provided, the MWC is not that conference.
