Athlon Sports to Aztecs: "You stink!" « Thread Started on Jun 8, 2012, 8:38pm »
Well, I would say that picking SDSU to finish SEVENTH in the MWC with a 5-7 record overall and 3-5 in conference amounts to a statement of no confidence.
What's worse, Athlon Sports college football annual predicts a 2-2 non-conference record the the Aztecs. Wonder which team, other than UDub, they think we will lose to. Apparently, they think we are going to lose a home game to one of the following: Army, North Dakota, or San Jose State.
Damn! I'll getting tired to spending money on these rags. Each new one has a worse opinion of the 2012 Aztecs than did the previous one. Either they know something we don't or else they are clueless.

What a crock of $#!+! Athlon is clueless and they need to pull there head out of there ass. Why would you waste your money on that bathroom/toilet paper rag?

They just listened to Rocky Long say how tough it was going to be and how the real fans shouldn't even bother a care about win/loss record. If all I had to go on was shuttered-tight spring balls and a head coach that emerges once or twice an offseason to throw sodium bicarb on any expectation grease fire, I'd pick us to be godawful too.

William must be one of those damn fans, those casual fans that Rocky talks about. Let's all egg him, he cares about the record and standing. Us real fans don't care about that stuff.

I buy them so that you will not have to.

Alright, good deal William. Just go to Barnes and Noble and read it and put it back in the rack where it belongs. It's free that way and you literally don't waste your money. Crap like this should motivate and fire up the boys!

I keep seeing your posts with the same take on Coach Long's comments over and over...I know the quotes you are thinking of. It's really too bad that you evidently lack sufficient sophistication to have grasped what the coach was trying to communicate at the time.

You can't read between the lines? A coach starts making excuses for the next year days before he loses his 6th of 7 bowl games against awful teams? c'mon son. next time you read something, you should think. he's an excuse artist. This is the 8th worst schedule in the country, there are 7 home games, this is a bad, bad league this year, and we get, real fans don't look at the record? gtfo of here with that S in year 4.

You know who the casual fans are? They are the ones that think because he beat Tom Craft and Chuck Long that he's a great coach and he's going to win big here - he's never going to beat bowl teams during the regular season or during the bowl and he's going to make a whole bunch of excuses and blame the fans that don't think beating half a dozen teams in the 100s is getting it done and then losing to some scrub middle of the road sun belt team.
Damn fans - it's coming, his excuses are just trying to build the walls a little higher when everyone gets sick of it.
Nothing is certain but the fact that things change. We must adapt to college sports new economics.

Pre season magazine opinions are about as good as mine. Or, most of the other posters around here. They are running a business, it's called selling magazines. What can they write and then distribute where it will sell the most? Yes, I know, that's a cynical outlook but then again it's probably based on as much fact as the magazine predictions.
Me? I think next year will be tougher than most think and no, I'm not all over Rocky because he should do better. We were a total mess of a football program and that doesn't get fixed overnight, or even in five seasons. Fixing the SDSU train wreck will take several years of respectable performance. I believe we will be respectable next year and the year thereafter. It will be a gradual process during which we all be pleasantly surprised/pleased and disappointed.
We are on a good track. To hell with all the magazines, buy them next year when they target our market by saying nice things about SDSU. Oh, and when they start saying nice things don't take it as gospel as they are simply selling you a product. Those rags are what they are. Don't look for love from someone trying to make a buck selling you something.

That says it all. Fans who actually know something about the sport and about the Aztec program as it stands (rather than as we would like it to be) realize that facing reality is not the same as making excuses. Just what should Rocky Long say? Maybe something like this; "Folks we are really going to be kick-ass in 2012. Hell, I doubt we'll lose a game." Yeah, that's the ticket. Come out strong and promise the moon. Of course, if things don't go so well and we lose maybe three or four, the season will be judged a failure by the less than sophisticated fans. "Geeze, you said we were going to go undefeated. What a lousy coach!"
There certainly are teams that overachieve and those that underachieve. In general, though, a team's performance is fairly well correlated with it's basic talent level. When was the last time that a team picked last in a conference ended up winning the championship? Maybe there has been such a case, but I can't think of one at the moment. Conversely, how often does a team picked to win a conference end up with a record of 2-10? Again, I can't think of such a case.
Using that concept as a guide, I'd have to say that SDSU has the talent to win anywhere from 6 to 9 games this season. We are not going to win only one or two, and we are not going to win eleven or twelve. We have enough good players to be competitive in almost all games (which does not mean that we will win almost all games), but, on the other hand, we do not have enough outstanding players to be a solid Top-10 pick.
If Rocky Long points out the areas in which the team has question marks and needs to improve, he is not being defeatist or putting excuses on the record. What he is going is treating fans like adults who actually know something about football and what it takes to field a team capable of finishing in the top 10% of the 124 schools in our division.
Unfortunately, not all fans, of the Aztecs or of any other school, are sophisticated enough to appreciate sober realism when they hear it.

Athlon covers all di football an impossible task her is likely there thinking. WE were 8-5 last year played awful the second half, offense was awful the first half save WAZZU. We lost Lindley and Hillman and Burrs therefore we should be worse,ty thier logic. They most likely do not know about the slew of injuries. They forget Katz was a 57 percent passer at abetter league with a worse offensive line. They are not aware of how good our running backs are that we lose nothing from Hillman loss. They do not recognize the loss of Walter last year.Hillman was inconsistent in short yardage except a few breakaways, but lost yards short yardage situations as often as not.. In 2010 they picked us sixth. If we stay free of major injuries and the QB's step up we will bew fine next year.We have four guys competing for tackle Corbett, Poole, Ayese and Dilley. It will be OK. If MIller moves to guard then we have a strong front. Johnson, Miller, Embernaty, Quuigley and who wins out at Tackle The combination of Hillmans inconsistency in short yardage and Ryan's 53 percent completion rate led to endless third and outs.. I see a saolid offense able to run in the middle and asoldi passing games, the defens eon the filed much less.
