2011-2012 Men's Basketball Season « Thread Started on Apr 15, 2012, 6:30pm »
Everyone keeps talking about next season (which will be awesome), but I just want to reflect on this past season. A lot of people say the 2010-2011 season (MWC Champs, Sweet 16, 34-3) put us on the map and got us national attention, which it did. In my opinion, though, this past season was more IMPORTANT to the program than the '10-'11 season. It was not a BETTER season (obviously, 34-3 + sweet sixteen vs. 26-8 and no tourney wins), just a more important one, and I think this gets overlooked a little bit. A lot of teams can have one amazing year, but a lot of times it's just a fluke. This past year's team proved that the 10-11 season wasn't a fluke, which is HUGE for the program. The 10-11 season PUT us on the map, but the 11-12 season KEPT us on the map, which is more important. It also set us up for the next years by showing recruits that we're here to stay. So, as you think about next season and how awesome it will be, don't forget how great this past season was. Thoughts?

I agree with you 100%. So with Jamaal Franklin being the unexpected, unquestioned MVP of this past years overachieving team, what does that say about Jamaal's legacy at SDSU. Could it be that his success will ultimately be what lands similar quality athletes with SDSU in the future? If Jamaal earns back to back All American/POY awards and SDSU goes far in the tournament...he'll have to be considered (if not the best) among the All Time Aztec greats.

Great post. Yes, this was a great season and it probably really helped to sustain the program. It definitely helped with recruiting. Winston Shepard had said from the outset this season that he was going to watch how our seasons progressed (UTEP, New Mexico, and SDSU) so without the effort put forth by the team this year, we probably wouldn't have pulled in Shepard. Also, this team sure answered the question of whether or not the stifling defense would leave with Justin Hutson. The team this year was really gritty and a great team to cheer for and support.

This past year was as good as the Fauxy Holcomb run to the tourney championship. And, as above, it really solidified this program as a mover and shaker on the west coast. damn, look at what those two years wrought: game on a mf'n carrier vs. Syracuse, Pond officials basically forcing UCLA to play us. Next year is where we take the next step. Just another great day to be an Aztec.

Alot of credit should go out to Coach Fisher for putting the Aztec basketball program on the map! I can't wait until he gets the court at Viejas named after him....Fisher Court!

trellzmybro> excellent, and I could not have said it better!Especially your line about showing recruits how this is a program that will be here, and they should give us a second thought before looking at other schools.
Afterall, we do have a great coach who was been to the Final Four a few times, and has won a NC. He has the experience, and with the right people, and coaching he will be returning there with another team soon! (that will be San Diego State of course!)

Excellent post trellz. I thought Coach Fisher did a great job this year, considering the lack of depth and height he had to deal with. Obviously, those shortcomings were exposed in the NC State game, but just getting there was huge. They had every excuse to fade at the end of the regular season, and in the MWC Tourney, but didn't. Of course, UNM's superior depth won out in the tournament final, but there's no shame in that. The Lobos truthfully had more talent to draw from this season. That won't be the case next year.

We could have won the NCS game, even with our limited height, if the rest of our game was on track. It was a 3 point game with 9 minutes to go. The Aztecs made only 4 of 16 shots from that point of the game.
UConn beat the Aztecs even though the Aztecs dominated rebounding and scoring in the paint. All the Aztecs had to do to win the game was shoot a little better. Rebounding was even so we had a leg up on UConn's task against the Aztecs last year.

We're a progam now. Several of you pointed towards several things that point to us being established.
-Honda Center strong-arming fucla into coming out of hiding -Carrier game vs. Cuse on national TV...a regular season game with the nation's focus on us. This will likely be the game of the week too. As a guy who went to games at Peterson Gym and then an almost empty Cox Arena when nobody watched us nor cared about us, this gives me goosebumos thinking about what Fisher built -Winston Shepard
Tony Bland proved we have nothing to worry about when what's-his-name went to that underachieving school in the sand. In fact he showed we have a ton to look forward to.
This small, over-achieving team played with toughness and grit. I remember an announcer saying this team plays physical like a big team. That was the best thing I heard all year about this team. It spoke volumes about their attitude and toughness.
My favorite moment of the year was the end of the CSU game when the Show blew the roof off Viejas with IBWWW when the Ram player shot his free throws. That was awesome.

We really only had 1 player playing out of position. His individual toughness and grit gave the team a tough identity.

I'd argue with two...Shelton and Jamaal. However, I can see the argument in Shelton playing his position.
Either way, this team was my favorite Aztec team of all sports ever.
A 6'8 big man who never dunked? Shelton was definitely out of position.
"6'8 big man" he plays PF. He's played PF all his life. We had a more athletic option also 6'8, but he barely got off the bench. We had a 6'11 center but Fisher decided to go with the 6'5 SG instead. We were small by choice.

I'm just arguing that he was out of position, is all. He was at most a 4, but he played the 5.

You're right. He was not a 5. I still believe Green and Stephens should have cut into Rahon's mins. If we couldn't hit shots at least we could have had a bigger presence inside...oh well...
