Chances of Petrino going to UNLV?
« Thread Started on Apr 14, 2012, 11:51am »

It may turn out that most of the "elite" schools avoid Petrino. Do you think UNLV has the gravitas to go for him? It would likely turn them around in a hurry. Might make them more of a target for Big East.

They just hired a pretty highly regarded coach in Bobby Hauck two years ago. They'd be crazy to start all over now with Petrino and his off-the-field track record.

It might also call into question their judgement and ethics!

You mean UNLV possesses those attributes now?

But Hauck is not working out so good. They've gotten worse. And so's their recruiting, which will continue to deteriorate with a disappearing MWC.

Hauck won with questionable kids at Montana and the program was already built for him. What is transpiring in Vegas exactly why so many of us shouted when people brought up his name as a candidate here.

The comment about recruiting is very accurate. UNLV's 2012 class is rated by Rivals as the worst of the new MWC other than CSU and Fresno, which fired their coaches. And Scout has UNLV's 2012 class with just two 3-star players. One is a JUCO transfer and those guys are almost always overrated. The other is Jonavaughn Williams, who we and everybody else passed on, reportedly because of character issues.

With two 2-win seasons, Hauck is on his way to being the next Mike Sanford, who won two games each of his first three years, then won five games in years 4 and 5 and was shown the door. With Boise and SDSU in for one more year, I foresee Hauck continuing to emulate Sanford.

And no, Petrino won't be replacing him. UNLV football is a dumpster fire so even if UNLV would take Petrino, and I bet they would, Petrino would be crazy to take that job.

Have to disagree with youthere SGF - Petrino would jump on it, I mean with all the strippers looking for something to do during the day, can you image what his admin staff would look like?

I still think Hauck can coach. He was playing a TON of frosh and sophs last season. I think UNLV would be stupid to fire him after three years. That's a TOUGH rebuild, and it's not like they pay much so they're unlikely to find a top notch Coach unless they open the wallet some more.

Think of how much trouble Bobby could get into in Vegas. All I can envision is limos filled with hookers & mountains of coke. 8-) :)

Petrino will have to Terry Bowden it for a while, however the tv gig is out. Terry sat for 10 years then hit North Alabama for 3 years and now is HC at Akron. He is slowly clawing his way back.
Akron is no bed of roses, back to back 1-11 seasons

Josh, the problem is recruiting. Hauck's third class is quite unimpressive. It looks eerily like Chuck Long's first class at SDSU. Check the other schools which offered:

http://rivals.yahoo.com/unlv/football/recruiting/commitments/2012/unlv-40

Holloway is the only one who has offers from any impressive schools and he's a JUCO transfer who therefore may not even qualify. As to how young the team is, according to Phil Steele's, Hauck started six seniors on a horrible defense last year. And although he started only three seniors on offense, they were the stars on that side of the ball, wideouts Philip Payne and Michael Johnson and TE Anthony Vidal.

I predict that Hauck will last two more years.

Is there a chance of Petrino going to UNLV? When? Right now, with Spring practice going or just over? Zero point zero zero chance of that. After the 2012 season? Near zero. I doubt that anybody in the FBS will take a chance on him any time soon. Maybe an FCS school or Div II, but not until this coming season is finished. If even then.

As for UNLV, they are not exactly rolling in dough as are schools like Kansas (which is handing Turner Gill several million dollars as he heads out the door after just two years). No doubt the suits in Vegas really, really hope that Hauck can somehow get his team to win enough games this year so that they don't have to bite the bullet and fire him. I would think that four wins, provided that there are also a few close losses, would be enough to get Hauck to a fourth year. (I would really like UNLV to be somewhat competitive, but I'm starting to wonder if there is any hope of that over there.)

Only BCS schools have the money to fire a coach after two seasons. The rest of us peasants have to pray that the has-beens or first-timers we mostly hire as football HCs can somehow spin straw into gold.

You just might be right on this one. Hauck seems to be in a position similar to what Jim Brandenburg faced at SDSU. Neither one of those guys forgot how to coach or recruit when they arrived at their new jobs. They had no support from the school or the community. They have very poor facilities and the outlook never did look good for Brandy and it does not for Hauck.

If I'm not mistaken Hauck & staff are the lowest paid coaches in the MWC, by far. They're going nowhere, literally and figuratively. They're UNLV's bargain basement.

Nothing is certain but the fact that things change. We must adapt to college sports new economics.

No, it's too far of a bike ride from Fayetteville to Vegas. Besides, his Harley is busted.

You say "...jump on it"? Was that an intended pun? Funny either way.
